Release Shame

  • Are you ready to break free from biases that hold you back and embrace a more inclusive world?
  • Have you ever struggled with feelings of shame or self-doubt because of harmful religious teachings?
  • Do you feel trapped by beliefs ingrained in you since childhood?
  • Are you tired of feeling like you have to choose between your faith and your identity as an LGBTQIA+ person, or as someone in support of the LGBTQIA+ community?

Move Past the "Clobber Verses"

The truth is, the Bible has been used to dehumanize and condemn the LGBTQIA+ community through the misuse and mistranslation of certain passages known as "clobber verses.” Religious communities, especially Christians, have used the clobber verses to attack and condemn the LGBTQIA+ community.

The weaponization of scripture continues to be used to harm and discriminate. These indoctrinated beliefs that have been instilled through family, religion, and our education can lead to us feeling trapped. Toxic theology, harmful belief systems, and homophobic religious communities and leaders caused immense harm to the LGBTQIA+ community, and it is time to dispel these harmful myths and break free from these false narratives.

Course Outline

Rev Karla and Goddess Mia | Module #1:

logo mark

In this module, Rev Karla will be discussing harmful theology and how it has been used to oppress marginalized communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ community.

logo mark

We’ll start by examining how the Bible has been used to justify discrimination. We will discuss how harmful theology has been used to justify other forms of oppression, such as racism and sexism. By understanding the historical and cultural context of the Bible and the ways it has been used to justify oppression, we can begin to challenge harmful theology and create a more inclusive and compassionate world.

logo mark

Goddess Mia joins in this teaching and will share her own experiences of navigating harmful theology. Goddess Mia asks, “Where am I safe?” inviting us to hold space for her and other members of the LGBTQIA+ community who are facing so much persecution today. She will also discuss how she has found healing and liberation through interpreting biblical texts in a more inclusive and empowering way.

Rev Karla and Pastor Paul | Module #2:

logo mark

In this module, we address the issue of complicit bias, which is the conscious decision to engage in behavior that supports and reinforces bias, even if one does not hold those beliefs themselves. This bias can create an environment that allows for extremist views to thrive, leading to harmful actions against marginalized communities. We discuss how this bias contributes to the rise of Christian nationalism, which is contrary to the teachings of Jesus. Jesus' message emphasized love, compassion, justice, and inclusivity for all people, regardless of their status or background.

Rev Karla is joined by Unconventional Pastor Paul in Module #2. He is a former evangelical pastor who unpacked his religious indoctrination and now shares his story of deconstruction and his new understanding of scripture and the teachings of Jesus.

Rev Karla and Amir Yass | Module #3:

logo mark

In this module, we will explore the controversy surrounding Marjorie Taylor Greene's sign that said "There are two genders: Male and Female. Trust the science!" This sign sparked backlash from the LGBTQ+ community and their allies, who saw it as a denial of the existence of non-binary genders and a harmful message. We will delve into the science behind gender and sexuality and why it is not binary, as well as the harmful effects of discrimination and stigma against LGBTQ+ individuals. We will also discuss the importance of language and terminology in creating a more inclusive society and interpreting biblical teachings in the context of modern understanding.

Amir Yass joins this teaching and shares his enlightening journey towards understanding and acceptance. May you receive Amir’s wisdom with an open heart.

Rev Karla and Jegaysus | Module #4:

logo mark

In Module #4 we discuss the issue of selective interpretation of scripture, hierarchical and exclusive religious institutions, intolerance and discrimination, theological justifications for colonialism and imperialism, and the rejection of scientific evidence. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is a violation of human rights, and laws protecting the LGBTQ+ community are necessary to ensure their safety and equal treatment under the law. This conversation also provides an overview of how queerness and homosexuality is viewed in different religions and the impact of religious patriarchy on women in the church. This module encourages greater understanding and tolerance of different religious beliefs and practices and challenges harmful attitudes and beliefs.

logo mark

Rev Karla welcomes Jegaysus to Module #4 who proudly proclaims, “I am a good person.” That mantra has been his beacon throughout his life, and most likely was his saving grace as he experienced a traumatic conversion therapy at a very young age. Jegaysus is pushing the boundaries of heteronormative biases about who Jesus was—and we are all applauding it!

Rev Karla and Marlana Glaeser | Module #5:

logo mark

In Module #5 Rev Karla focuses on understanding how indoctrinated beliefs can hinder one's spiritual journey. These beliefs are instilled in individuals through their family, religion, and educational experiences from a young age, and they shape their perceptions of themselves and the world around them, often leading to biases and limited ways of thinking. Unpacking these beliefs requires individuals to question their own beliefs, examine their origin, and determine if they align with their values and desires. Rejecting indoctrinated beliefs is a necessary step to living a fulfilling and authentic life.

Marlana Glaeser joins Rev Karla in this final module. Marlana’s story will resonate with so many people who have deconstructed. From her first words in her video, Marlana shares from the heart and from this space, you will connect with her and find elements of your own story in hers, inviting you to release those indoctrinated beliefs.
